At SHOW HOME, Richard will present a one-day installation of works made during his recent residency in Seoul, South Korea. In this body of work, Richard has used a conspiracy theory known as the 'Jump Room' theory, detailing the existence of a teleportation system allowing members of the US government and intelligence services to travel between Earth and Mars. The works shown will include drawings, video and documented performance (with Sooyon Kim). Taking further inspiration from Saul Bellow, Virginia Woolf, his own places of employment and Barack Obama's proud swatting of a fly, Richard has adapted this story into metaphor, cinematic narrative, theoretical aid and farce.
"People suffering from dementia experience the return of distorted memories that appear unpredictably and in strange combinations – and yet they usually do have a root, be it in their own direct experience, or a fictional narrative. I think my works are developing an analogous relation to history, personal experience and fictional narratives – the persistence of these, but also their mutability and inevitable decay."
"In this body of work, made in a country, city and political context that were new to me, I have tried to make use a rather extravagant, possibly entirely fabricated yet detailed set of narratives about teleportation. With it, or through it I have looked at, and played with, the cinematic, 'network space', professional political image and performance – how might these be felt and regarded across differing disciplines, cultures and historical periods? So, this is a set of attempts, which might lead to further attempts"
ONE NIGHT ONLY \\ SUNDAY, 14th FEB, 2016 - 5PM - 9PM
SHOW HOME will host a number of Richard Whitby's drawings as well as films in the entrance and main room of the space.
