In High Beams Keira Greene brings together new photography and moving image works in a site specific installation for SHOW HOME.
High Beams documents the internal world of a fictional retreat space. Images have been gathered from retreats and communes across Europe and the California coast to form a montage of a new closed community. The feeling is one of cool disregard for the outside world, former lives forgotten on a soft focus lawn.
Keira’s interest is in the environmental qualities of the retreat space and its binary found in the searching subject. She looks to the canon of cinema and how irony is often employed to depict the journey of self-development. It is as if we need permission to be ourselves, permission which we can find within the safety of a temporary residence and often away from our real relationships.
High Beams select empty, vast, temporary spaces. The camera favors partial or restricted views reflecting the tentative nature of these liminal worlds. As a result the audience is implicit in editing their own relationship with the fragmented images of landscape and symbolic objects, compacted with esoteric meaning. Some adhere more than others, much like the real experience of such ideological space.
A text piece tells us to ‘Track Back’, it flags up our communication with former generations, a journey back and forth that reimagines possible outcomes for ‘living-togetherness’. This is a well-trodden path of the temporary contract with a spiritual journey, where the emptiness and the horizon gets us closer to a metaphysical understanding of our prosaic lives. With this commitment to time and space our fantasies can play out and be set in motion, much like the contract we make with cinema. These spaces exist out there in waiting for us.
